Todd DeSorbo, US Olympic Head Coach

Todd DeSorbo is the head coach of the UVA Swimming and Diving Women’s and Men’s Team. He has led the women’s team to four consecutive NCAA Championships, and countless American, NCAA, and World Records. DeSorbo has had extensive international coaching experience as well, leading the women’s United States Olympic Swim Team in the 2024 Paris Olympics. DeSorbo coached 6 of the 24 US Olympians on the 2024 women’s team, and most recently won USA Swimming’s Coach of the Year Award. DeSorbo started his collegiate coaching career at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington before serving as Associate Head Coach at NC State. He has been the head coach at UVA for 8 years. DeSorbo has been incorporating Dr. Ono’s work into his coaching for 7 years.

Ken Ono, UVA Math Professor

Dr. Ken Ono serves as the STEM Advisor to the Provost at the University of Virginia. Dr. Ono served as chair of the UVA Math Department and is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. Dr. Ono has been advising elite swimmers since 2016, applying his extensive background in mathematics, data science, and statistics to the sport. Dr. Ono’s contributions to swimming research has included applying new sensor technology, developing new analysis techniques, utilizing computational fluid dynamics, and pioneering how researchers communicate with coaches and athletes to give actionable feedback (including using the concept of a “digital twin” to measure athlete progress). Dr. Ono was also a 3-time member of (age group) Team USA Triathlon (2012-2014) earning top 40 finishes in World Championships each year.
